1 out of 5 Malaysian doctors quit to become waiters

According to a report from Asia News Network (ANN), new housemen in Malaysia tend to quit due to the long wait (month up to one year) before being officially appointed, especially for hospitals in Kuala Lumpur.

The cost in becoming a doctor in Malaysia is arguably one of the most expensive, between RM 50 thousand to RM 1 million.

Some of them were found to be working as waiters, night market hawkers and even in-flight stewards and stewardesses.

Dr S. Jeyaindran, Deputy Director General of Health said that only 1000 to 5000 medical candidates choose to complete their studies. Among the many reasons cited as being forced unto the career path by parents.

"Malaysian housemen only has to handle four to six patients each. This is nothing compared to the eight to 12 patients for each housemen in Singapore, Australia and the United States," he said.

However, the veteran physician acknowledged that the ministry needs to explore other ways that are more flexible in hiring young doctors.
