A loan of any kind is a serious financial undertaking, and the informed student is in a much better position to find the most beneficial loan package available. Although scholarships and grants are always the preferred form of financial aid as they do not require repayment, most students will still face a gap in their college fund that requires a student loan of one form or another.

PTPTN repayment

The National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) was established under the National Higher Education Fund Act 1997 (Act 566). PTPTN’s objective is to ensure that no student should be denied access to higher education because of financial reasons.

  • Admission into approved courses at local public or private universities or colleges must be gained.
  • Students are eligible irrespective of the academic performance or financial background.

Loan amount:
RM5,000 per year for a Diploma course and RM16,000 per year for a Degree course

How to apply?

  • Ensure that you meet all the eligibility requirements as stated by PTPTN
  • Open a bank account with BSN/BIMB/Public Bank/CIMB/Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd. To view list of banks, visit

MARA Study Loan Programmes or Skim Pinjaman Pelajaran (SPiP) were introduced in 1966 when Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) was formed. Students have to apply to the respective institutions before applying for the loan.


  • SPiP Program Khas (Special Programme)

For excellent SPM leavers who wish to take pre-university courses such as (but not limited to) ADFP, A-Levels, International Baccalaureate (IB) and Australia Matriculation (AUSMAT).

  • SPiP Pinjaman Terbuka (Open Loan)

This loan is typically given to qualified Bumiputera students to continue their studies in Institut Pengajian MARA (IPMa) and local private Higher Education Institutions (IPTS).


  • General requirements require that you are a Malaysian citizen with bumiputera status and acquired at least credits in Bahasa Melayu at SPM/SPMV level.
  • Never been sponsored by any scholarship bodies at the same education level.
  • Institutions of higher learning are recognized by Malaysian Government or private institutions of higher learning are recognized by Private Education Division, Ministry of Education.
  • Currently undergoing/enrolled in courses that are of great importance to MARA.
  • The socio-economic status of the family where the annual taxable joint income of the parents or spouses must not exceed RM80,000.

Loan amount:
Loan covers tuition fees and allowance while also depending on the student’s financial background.

  • The applicant must be a member of KOJADI with a RM100 initial shares.
  • The applicant must hold the requisite additional shares ranging from RM500 to RM2,000 shares for each child depending on the loan amount applied for.
  • The applicant must nominate a child/nominee under a relevant loan scheme.
  • The nominated child/nominee must have gained admission to an approved institution of higher learning locally or abroad.

Loan amount:
Maximum amount of loan is RM 35,000 and released in two or three disbursements over the entire duration of the course of study.

Skim Prihatin Pendidikan 1Malaysia (SPP1M) Maybank


Skim Prihatin Pendidikan 1Malaysia (SPP1M) is a ‘top up’ based scheme for the funds or scholarships that are readily in the market that will benefit Malaysian students. This scheme is designed as an additional financial aid for students that are qualified to pursue their studies for Bachelors’ Degree or Master’s Degree in high quality universities locally.

OCBC Earn and Learn


OCBC Earn & Learn Education Loan offers a loan tenure of up to 10 years, a Fixed Deposit interest insured by PIDM, and no legal fees.

This loan is best for those who wish to pursue studies in select private insitutions in Malaysia.


  • Malaysians only
  • Age 23 to 60 years old
  • Minimum household income of RM7,500
  • For Foundation or Diploma programme bundled with a Degree programme
  • For Degree Programme onwards
  • Only selected Universities/Colleges are eligible for the OCBC Earn&Learn Education Loan.

Loan Amount

RM500,000 Maximum Loan.

You can also get 2 times your pledged Fixed Deposit amount. For example, if you pledge a Fixed Deposit amount of RM50,000, you can receive a RM100,000 education loan. The RM50,000 Fixed Deposit you pledged to OCBC Bank will earn interest.

The AMMA Foundation was established as a Company by guarantee and not having share capital in 1980. Its principal objective is to assist needy Malaysians to pursue their studies at approved institutions of higher learning in Malaysia.

  • Full-time Diploma/Degree courses

  • Medical & Dentistry Courses (only for final 3 years of study)

Loan Amount

Degree courses: up to RM 4,500 per semester, RM 9,000 per year (maximum: RM 27,000)

Diploma courses: up to RM 3,500 per semester, RM 7,000 per year (maximum: RM 21,000)

FMM Tunku Tan Sri Mohamed Study Loan Scheme

  • Applicants must be Malaysian citizens who are eligible to pursue/are pursuing full time studies in local universities/colleges/institutions. They should have good academic and extra curricular records.
  • Diploma and Degree courses in Engineering, Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), Economics and Business Studies, Management and Accounting.

This scheme is prepared for individuals who planned to further their studies in the country or abroad. The financing includes tuition fees, cost of living, buying text books and other study tools.


  • Malaysian citizen aged 18 years and above, and not more than 65 years old by the end of financing period.

  • Applicant is not a student: Can apply through their parents, husband/wife, siblings or legal guardians.

Yayasan Bank Rakyat Convertible Loan

The Convertible Education Fund means that the repayment total from the sponsorship received may vary or be modified or subject to change according to the conditions specified and subject to the discretion of YBR.

The Modifiable Education funding runs on the concept of “Qardhul Hassan” which means the sponsorship does not incur any interest or additional conditions during repayment of the loan.

i) Age not younger than 18 years old at the time of applying for PPBU and not more than 30 years during graduation for these programmes: Vocational Certificate, Diploma, Vocational Diploma, Bachelor and Professional.

For applicants of the Masters and Doctorate (PhD) programmes, you must aim to graduate before the age of 45 years.

ii) Applicants must be enrolled in a FULL TIME programme. Applicants who are part-time students are not eligible to apply.
