Formerly the Malaysian Army Academy, UPNM (Malaysian Defense University) caters to those who have militaristic dreams, and to fulfil the requirements of educating both army graduates and public students for the national defense. Formed in 2006, over a thousand graduates have obtained certificates and currently serve the national defense through units in the army, navy and air force, applying their knowledge in subjects of science, engineering and management.
Through their niche programmes, UPNM has managed to form solid programmes that deal with subjects that can be applied to navy submarines, military vehicles and defense accessories. The university accepts civilian enrollment, and the students are graded on leadership and fitness alongside their chosen programme subject.
The research carried out at UPNM is certainly more explosive than those at regular universities. Many of the engineering topics deal with ballistics, demolition, body armour and weaponry, while students of computer science who are interested in cyber warfare and military simulation will be more than welcome here.
