This field is one of the traditional arts courses which provides you with useful knowledge about different languages such as English, French, Spanish and/or German.

The programme will enable school-leavers with an interest in languages on the one hand and literature and other forms of cultural expression (e.g. film, visual arts, popular or traditional music, theatre) on the other, to act as ‘cultural mediators’, i.e. as professionals who are in the business of explaining and interpreting Malaysia to other nationalities and other cultures to the Malaysians. These professionals may be educators, journalists, PR personnel or organizers of cultural events and educational tours.

Pathway

For students in this field, postgraduate study is a great opportunity towards getting a specialized field of interest. Some may like to take up journalism, others might like to study a specific language and become an expert at it and others might be interested in cinematic arts and/or public relations, and comparative linguistics. Other people might also be interested in going into education, cultural studies, humanities, social sciences. The options are many and you are only limited by your imagination.

Subject Focus

Students have a number of options in terms of language and literature. Options may include Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), English, French, German Tamil, Spanish and other languages. Besides learning languages, students will study many cultural attributes associated with the language they are learning.

Also, there are other fields such as translation, interpretations, linguistics and other disciplines.

Career Info

As a linguist and a student of languages, you can work in journalism, writers, editors, public speakers, teachers/lecturers, broadcasters, event management, due diligence, translators, creative copywriter, social media and community engagement specialists, researchers, content developers, public relation executives, marketers, and other career options.

Salary

Salary for executive levels: RM2,500 – RM4,000
Specialists with experience: RM4,000 – RM12,000
Senior positions: RM12,000 and above.

Job Demand

In Malaysia:There is always a demand for talented individuals. Avid linguists will be able to find jobs and they might even be headhunted by employers.

Global: chances of finding a job is highly dependent on what you can do and what can you offer to your employers. Many journalists in countries like France are not French, but they have such a great grasp of the language that some of them became better at the French language than the people of France.

Similarly, there are professors of the English language in the UK, US and other English speaking countries who are not native speakers of the language.
