College foundations is a pre-university programme offered by private institutions of higher learning. Sometimes referred as feeder courses, college foundations are designed to prepare students for the subjects and courses that they will be undertaking at a degree level.

What Makes It Special

College foundations is one of the quickest pre-university programmes because they are tailored for a particular programme: most are one year long, some having two semesters while the others have three (two long semesters and one short semester).

You can also apply for a PTPTN loan, provided you take your college foundations in one of these institutions:

  • Multimedia University (MMU)
  • Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN)
  • Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP)
  • Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNIRAZAK)
  • UNITAR International University (UNITAR)
Eligibility

Most of these courses require at least 5 credits in SPM. For the science courses, students will have to obtain credits for the relevant science subjects in SPM.

Available Subjects/Streams

Foundation programmes usually provide specialisation in precise areas of study such as the fields of science, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, law, business, computer & IT, and engineering.

MoHE Compulsory Subjects (Malaysian students only):

  • Bahasa Kebangsaan (exemption for graduates with credit in BM)
  • Malaysian Studies
  • Moral Studies or Islamic Studies

Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY) on the other hand is a non-discipline specific foundation programme which allows students the flexibility to choose a mix-mash of subject units.

Assessment Method

Study years: You will be required to take 10-12 subjects in your relevant stream to be completed within 3 semesters (1 year).

Exam: Assessment comprises a mix of coursework (such as research projects, assignments, presentations, reports and class tests) and final examinations conducted at the end of each semester.

Grades: Foundation programmes don’t award students a degree upon completion, but guarantee a certain level of qualification that allows them to follow degree awarding study programmes.

Cost

The cost of these courses can vary according to the institutions. There are pre university courses starting as low as RM3, 000 and some as high as RM20, 000.

How to Apply

College foundation application can be obtained from the private institutions, or can be downloaded at their respective websites. Applicants must complete and submit the forms to the programme manager in person, by mail or through e-mail.

Most of the intakes are in January or middle of the year.

Uni Pathways

College pre-university courses are mostly only recognised by the university, college or institution that is offering them. This is because it is specially tailored for that particular university.

If you wish to switch universities, you may have to take extra credits to meet the requirements of the new university or retake another pre-university course.

Some college foundations are accepted at other institutions other than the administering college such as the Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY) which has been known to be recognized overseas in countries such as Australia and New Zealand and foreign branch universities in Malaysia.
