What is Petroleum Engineering?

Petroleum Engineering investigates the extraction of oil and gas from the earth, fuel processing methods and environmental & safety issues

Petroleum Engineers are employed by oil or gas companies to design, test and implement efficient methods to extract petroleum products from the earth and sea floor. They spend most of their time making estimations because they can never see what is actually going on thousands of meters below the ground. They work closely with other professionals, such as geologists, to locate the dig site, design and build the machines that extract as much oil and gas as possible, and oversee the removal ...

Petroleum Engineers are employed by oil or gas companies to design, test and implement efficient methods to extract petroleum products from the earth and sea floor. They spend most of their time making estimations because they can never see what is actually going on thousands of meters below the ground. They work closely with other professionals, such as geologists, to locate the dig site, design and build the machines that extract as much oil and gas as possible, and oversee the removal and processing of the petroleum itself. All this, while working to keep costs low.

Petroleum Engineering is an investigative application of maths and science in conjunction with geology. Petroleum engineering can also be classified under chemical engineering because it involves chemical reactions as well but has since outgrown the sub-field as an independent study as more people are dependent on fuel on a daily basis making it an essential and valuable commodity. Students will learn to oversee the various processes involved in an efficient, safe and environmentally responsible way as they satisfy the world’s incessant energy needs in a long term, sustainable manner.

How does your education pathway look like?

What skills do you need for a Petroleum Engineering course?

Rock Head

No, not the rock head that loves Rock N’ Roll music, but one who has an undoubted interest in the earth and the rocks that compose it. While many couldn’t care less about rocks, you have always found them fascinating, and wanted to go into a course that involved geology to observe how they change over time.

Visionary

While most of kids your age don’t even know it exists, you use the calendar application on your phone religiously, to plan your entire day. You like to be in control of your life in an end-to-end manner. You have a plan, a big one, and you know exactly what you need to do to get there.

Good with Numbers

Petroleum engineering is no different when compared to other engineering courses, when it comes to the importance math plays in the respective fields. Numbers are like your reflexes, you don’t really notice how sharp they really are because it’s simply natural to you.

Problem Solver

You live for riddles, and those quirky brain teasers someone posts every now and then on Facebook. Unlike most people, who would Google the answers to seem smarter than their peers, you don’t rest until you find the right answer through your own effort.
