What is Chemistry?

Chemistry is the study of the state of matter and the interaction of organic and non-organic compounds as an essential part of biology and the main source of creating medicines

Do you realise we do chemistry every day?! As soon as you wake up in the morning, you start doing chemistry. Chemistry explains why an egg changes when you fry it and why your non-stick pan is non-sticky. Chemistry explains how soap and shampoo make you clean, why you feel tired before coffee and alert after it, and how the petrol in your car gets you to work. In fact, you start doing some chemistry yourself as soon as your eyes open - your sense of vision works because a small organic molecule changes shape in the back of your eye when light hits it.

As it studies matter at its most basic level, there is much overlap between chemistry and other science subjects. Chemical processes and the composition of elements play a large part in the study of living organisms and matter’s relationship to forces. The origins of the discipline lie in the ancient art of alchemy, the goal of which was to turn worthless material into gold. Though this obviously didn’t work, it was based on the founding principle of chemistry: that matter is composed of building blocks which give it it’s essential properties, and if these building blocks are altered in some way – a change of temperature or the addition of another substance – then changes often occur.

How does your education pathway look like?

What skills do you need for a Chemistry course?

Passionate

White there are indeed many sub-disciplines you can eventually branch out to, you need to like or be passionate about chemistry. If you didn’t like chemistry back in school, that won’t change here, and you may want to look elsewhere for your potential future career

Good with your Hands

Yes, your theoretical knowledge is greatly important. However, you will also spend loads of time in the labs testing and researching your findings, which require a steady hand!

Inquisitive

The subject matter you will deal with are much less concrete than other sciences, and more tangible. Some parts of chemistry are yet to be understood, as such, you will need to possess an inquisitive mind to make it far in this course!
