Education minister Radzi Jidin announced on August 15th that the re-opening of schools has been postponed from September 1 to October 3.

This reopening, however, will not apply to schools in states that are currently in Phase 1 of the National Recovery Plan.
The postponement was announced after the government was urged to get all schoolchildren, especially those between 12 and 17 years old, vaccinated before schools were allowed to reopen. The health ministry stated that schoolchildren will be vaccinated starting on September 15.
In a video clip on Facebook, Radzi stated that the ministry delayed the reopening of schools due to the current health and risk assessment.
When schools reopen, it will be done in stages starting with students who are preparing for public exams.
“And whatever decision is reached, is based on the safety of our kids. We also take into account the situation in the respective states,” he mentioned, adding that this included taking into account the vaccination rate in each state.
Last years, schools were only open for less than half a year due to the pandemic and this year students returned to schools in March/April only to have it closed again in May due to the spike in cases, causing students to return to online learning.
