Overview

The Jardine Foundation is an educational trust established in 1982 to mark the 150th Anniversary of the Jardine Matheson Group. The Foundation in its discretion awards Jardine Scholarships annually to students to enable them to attend educational establishments, primarily selected colleges at the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. The Jardine Foundation is now seeking applications from students who are applying to the preferred Colleges at Oxford and Cambridge Universities for the academic year commencing in 2018. For first degree courses, the scholarships are for periods of three or four years, or such longer period as the Trustees upon the recommendation of the Scholarship Committee may decide. They are tenable for courses at Oxford and Cambridge, with very strong preference being given to undergraduate courses at the following Colleges: University of Cambridge University of Oxford Downing, Magdalene, Peterhouse, Trinity Exeter, Oriel, The Queen’s, Trinity. In addition to the scholarships for undergraduate studies, the Foundation also considers a limited number of applications for scholarships for postgraduate studies. Direct application will generally not be accepted for postgraduate scholarships. Potential candidates will be recommended through the preferred Colleges at Oxford and Cambridge from among those individuals who have been accepted by the Universities.

Criteria

Applicant must meet all the below requirements

Applicants must normally be within seven years of having completed their secondary school education, at the date of entry to any one of the Colleges referred to in the Introduction and must:
(a) have reached an academic standard to qualify for entry to any one of such Colleges or Universities;
(b) be resident in any of the countries or territories in which Jardine Matheson Holdings Limited or its subsidiaries operate or have significant business interests, these include Cambodia, mainland China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam;
Note: Generally, applications will not be accepted from candidates whose parents have not resided in the relevant country or territory for at least seven years prior to the proposed date of entry to University.
(c) be in a satisfactory state of health; and
(d) be single.
In making awards, the Scholarship Committee will take into account not only academic achievement but also:
(a) personal qualities and character with particular regard to the extent to which the applicant has demonstrated exceptional qualities of leadership and fellowship;
(b) achievements in non-curricular activities, including sports;
(c) community involvement and activities; and
(d) other attributes which, in the opinion of the Scholarship Committee, indicate that the applicant is likely to become an outstanding citizen with a high commitment to the performance of public duties and/or community involvement.

a) The Jardine Foundation offers full scholarships to students which cover the range of fees and expenses necessary to support their studies. (b) The scholarship will include: (i) university tuition fees payable directly to the University; (ii) college fees excluding board and lodging payable directly to the College; (iii) an annual stipend to be determined by the Trustees on a case by case basis to cover board and lodging and all other incidental expenses (subject to the discretion of the Trustees, the stipend will be payable in four instalments); (iv) the cost of the UK Immigration Health Surcharge; and (v) a standard economy class airfare to be reimbursed at cost to the Scholar from the place of residence to the United Kingdom at the beginning of the scholarship and for the return journey to the place of residence on completion of the scholarship period. (c) In cases of financial hardship, the Trustees may, in their absolute discretion, make arrangements by way of supplemental awards, loans or such other means as they may think fit to assist Jardine Scholars in meeting their essential expenses.

Application forms are available at www.jardine-foundation.org, or can be obtained by writing to the Secretaries of The Jardine Foundation at G.P.O. Box 70, Hong Kong, or by email to [email protected]. Applications should be dealt with as follows: (a) All applications must be submitted directly or through their secondary schools, together with the following: (i) A personal statement describing the applicant’s objectives, aspirations, plans after graduation and particulars of their extra-curricular activities, including sports, and their level of community involvement (in not more than 700 words); (ii) A recent passport-size photograph; (iii) A copy of the completed UCAS application form; and (iv) Certified copies of GCSE, A/AS Level and IB transcripts, or of equivalent qualifications subject to the examination system of the relevant country or territory as and when it is available. These include, but not limited to, HKDSE certificates, SPM or STPM certificates and SKHU certificates. (b) For applicants attending secondary school or the equivalent, applications must include a testimonial signed by the school principal setting out: (i) The applicant’s achieved and/or predicted academic results; (ii) Remarks which will assist the Scholarship Committee in its assessment; and (iii) Any other relevant information for the application. (c) For applicants who have graduated from their secondary school, applications must be submitted, together with references, directly or through the principal of the secondary school, or the equivalent, which the applicant last attended.
