An agreement has been signed between Malaysia’s Perdana University and the University of California, San Diego. In this 10-year joint collaboration, tremendous opportunities are expected to happen between institutions.
Yesterday, officials of Perdana University and the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego) signed a collaboration agreement during a white coat ceremony held at Perdana University’s campus. UC San Diego, with its long history of excellence in education, research and medicine, has been chosen from among the top schools of medicine in the United States to lead this initiative.
In this partnership, UC San Diego will help develop the Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine (PUGSOM) into an internationally distinguished academic institution. This 10-year joint collaboration will focus on enhancing and implementing:
- A forward-thinking medical curriculum
- A model for comprehensive patient care
- A platform for innovative world-class research in Malaysia and Southeast Asia
Furthermore, opportunities for clinical research from a global health perspective will exist in many areas, including cardiovascular, neuroscience, tropical diseases, diabetes, cancer, and trauma care, added David Brenner, VC for Health Sciences and Dean of the UC San Diego School of Medicine.
Delighted with the collaboration, Tan Sri Datuk Dr Mohan Swami, Chairman of the Board of Governors of Perdana University said that the collaboration will help boost the institution’s biomedical research, biotechnology and pharmaceutical infrastructure. Moreover, to complement all these developments, they plan to set up new academic teaching facilities, which include a 600-bed hospital.
Perdana University is the first medical school in Malaysia to offer graduate entry medical education similar to the model in the United States. PUGSOM was established in 2011 with the vision to contribute to the global community through the pursuit of excellence in education, research, and service.
