Published by Afterschool.my on Jan 16, 2017, 04:36 pm

Got one degree? No good. Go get two degrees – where got money? Ok… Use the internet and learn cheap or for free. Just don’t lepak la!

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said Malaysians need to adapt to the changes in education and build desire to pursue knowledge and skills to the highest level.

Having a degree alone isn’t enough because there is too much competition out there and there are too many people with good grades who graduated from colleges. That is why you guys need to have better skills and go after something that others don’t have. Be different.

So previously, when education wasn’t available to all, being a degree holder was good enough to go up the social ladder. But now things are very different.

There are more than 20 public institutions and polytechnic and other types of institutions of higher learning. There are also more than 100 private institutions. So, there are many graduates out there waiting to get hired. But you will be hired faster if you have skills and knowledge that companies and industries want.

Najib said education is very important to improve the country. He said if civilisation depended only on the military power, they will not be able to survive for a long time. But with good education, there can be good economy, and the country will be better.

In a way, he is right. Having a degree isn’t really enough, especially if the degree education isn’t relevant to the job or career someone plans to pursue. So, there are so many skills to learn, if you want to be different.

Let’s assume that you’re studying a degree in business. The classroom education is focusing on the theoretical framework of how business is conducted and how companies work. But you, as a student, need to know how the economy work, the regulation and laws of business, contracts, how can you market things on the internet, how to correctly use social media, how to understand and talk to data and make good decision and more.

But of course, no one expects you to learn everything…

Instead, everybody expects you to pick up something and be good at it. That will get you somewhere better than most.
